I’m having trouble finding straight answers with which Greek Islands are particularly known for their food. Any suggestions? Especially places that won’t be shutting down the first two weeks of October.
Most importantly, we enjoy authenticity. We want to avoid resorts and the cruise ship crowds. Local tavernas and bakeries (especially sweets and breakfast pastries/coffee) are of particular interest, not high or haute fusion cuisine.
We’re also looking for an island with wineries to tour, olive presses to see, cooking classes, and maybe even dinner with a local family, similar to La Cesarina in Italy.
It’s amazing how difficult it is to find books on Greek food tourism too. Anybody have any good book suggestions? For example, I found Fred Plotkin’s Italy for the Gourmet Traveler to be amazing. Something like that for Greece would be wonderful.
